Maximising Behaviour Change for Sustainability
AWAKE: Cultivating Sustainability Reference List The articles and resources below contain many of the ideas, theories and research discussed in the Tim Cotter Cultivating Sustainability workshop at the Green Skills Centre for Sustainable Living. This is by no means a definitive list, and requests and suggestions for additions are welcome.

What is social marketing?
Social marketing is an approach designed to support community change whether it is in the environment, training, community health, mental health, safety etc. Communication alone is not sufficient to change behaviour. Communication strategies are needed but they must be part of a larger strategy. |

In Search of How People Change
How people intentionally change addictive behaviors withand without treatment is not well understood by behavioralscientists. This article summarizes research on self-ini-tiated and professionally facilitated change of addictivebehaviors using the key transtheoretical constructs ofstages and processes of change. Modification of addictivebehaviors involves progression through five stages—pre-contemplation, contemplation, preparation, action, andmaintenance—and individuals typically recycle throughthese stages several times before termination of the ad-diction. Multiple studies provide strong support for thesestages as well as for a finite and common set of changeprocesses used to progress through the stages. Researchto date supports a transtheoretical model of change thatsystematically integrates the stages with processes ofchange from diverse theories of psychotherapy. |
Basic Passive Solar Design
Australia receives an annual average radiation of about 600 watts per sq. metre on exposed horizontal surface. With careful design we can trap about 500 W/ sq.m. and use it to heat a building. To visualize 500w think of the heat given off by a 1000w electric radiator. |
